Where Chelsea Stand On Declan Rice Transfer As The ‘Next Paul Pogba’ Option Could Be Signed

Chelsea are resigned to the fact that long-term target Declan Rice is likely to stay put this summer at West Ham as the next ‘Paul Pogba’ option comes onto the table instead, if one certain Blues midfielder was to seal his ideal transfer return away.

The Blues have always been huge admirers of Rice and have wanted to make up for their mistake of releasing him when they had him in their ranks.

West Ham have never once entertained potentially cashing in on a player who is viewed by their supporters as the natural heir to Mark Noble’s throne.

England international Rice has two years left, with a further option of another one still to run, on his current deal with the Hammers.

London understands that there is currently no wriggle room from the £150m valuation that West Ham have placed on the back of their No. 41 and this has caused not only Chelsea to look elsewhere, but also Manchester United too, who themselves are on the verge of signing Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong.

A similar sentiment has been echoed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano who has provided added context onto the situation surrounding the 23-year-old Three Lions international.

He wrote in his latest CaughtOffside column: “Declan Rice has been a Chelsea target for at least two years but as far as I know West Ham continue to have the same position: there is no intention to sell him this summer, even knowing that Rice will not sign a new contract under current conditions,” Romano explains.

“West Ham are relaxed and know that only a crazy offer could change that, while Manchester United are only focused on Frenkie de Jong for midfield so far.” So what next for Chelsea, stick to the likes of Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour for one season at the very least or look elsewhere?

Well, whatever is decided could very much depend on the future of Jorginho, who is understood to want a Serie A return this summer amid Juventus interest.

Juventus are currently negotiating with Todd Boehly for the sale of Matthijs de Ligt, so Chelsea’s No. 5 could be added into that equation.

Whether or not the current World Champions take up this opportunity or not remains to be seen but the latest on Rice has certainly given Boehly some food for thought.

Another sticking point for Chelsea is how they construct this deal for a former Jose Mourinho favourite.
