Barcelona veteran yet to make decision over ‘MLS future’, Xavi wants him to continue

Barcelona’s golden era, coached by Pep Guardiola, featured some established brilliant players at its heart. Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Dani Alves, Lionel Messi, among others, were household names already.

Apart from this, he also brought in a host of talent from La Masia. Inarguably the biggest bet at the time, from this lot, was Sergio Busquets. Fast-forward 14 years, he is the Barcelona captain and arguably the greatest ever in his position.

However, his time donning the garnet and blue is soon coming to an end, it seems. There have been reports floating that suggest that Busi is tempted by a move to the MLS and will leave Barcelona on a free transfer to join one of the American outfits.

He is yet to make a final decision about his future, though, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. With the World Cup looming large, Busquets is only focused on Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Busquets has been quizzed about his future multiple times during press conferences, but has managed to dodge the question each time, often responding sarcastically. “Another one who wants to retire me now”, he says.

Delighted with his performances, Xavi wants the player to renew, for at least another season. However, the truth is, Barça will be active in the market next summer to look for his replacement, either way.

Busquets has already seen Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto being shifted to second fiddle this season in favour of younger players. He realises that his fate could turn out to be similar should he continue next season.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is one player who has come up recently, as the ‘chosen one’ by Xavi. Busquets has given him his cosign as well, claiming that the Spaniard was a ‘great player’.
