Xavi confirms Griezmann’s permanent move to Atletico Madrid

Barcelona have been in talks with Atletico Madrid in recent weeks over the exact terms of Antoine Griezmann’s loan deal.

The Frenchman’s contract has caused quite a stir between the two clubs in these early parts of the campaign, with Atletico Madrid giving Griezmann limited game-time in an attempt to avoid paying the €40 million release clause at the end of the season.

It forced Barcelona to seek legal measures. But with the Catalans finding no success, they reportedly kickstarted talks with Atletico Madrid over new terms of the loan deal that could see the asking price being lowered significantly.

Barcelona coach Xavi has now confirmed the deal, suggesting that Barcelona have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid. He also wished Griezmann good fortune for his future endeavours.

“We’re all happy with the agreement and I wish the player the best,” said Xavi (h/t Samuel Marsden), who has overseen a major squad overhaul at Barcelona this summer.

Xavi’s comment comes in the midst of speculations suggesting that the Blaugrana have agreed to a €20 million sale for the forward, with an additional €4 million in add-ons.

Part of the club since 2019, Griezmann was never able to make a significant impact at Camp Nou. He scored 35 goals in 102 matches, often struggling with form and a lack of consistency. It ultimately led to his return to Atletico Madrid last year, when he rejoined the club on a two-year loan deal.

It appears Atleti are now on course to make the loan permanent, which could be significant for Barcelona as the player was sitting on a lucrative wage packet at Camp Nou.

In fact, Griezmann’s reported €17 million salary was going to be impossible to sustain for Barça in the current scheme of things.

Hence, his permanent move to Atletico Madrid could go a long way in helping the club balance the books, even though the Blaugrana may not get their desired €40 million.
